Lowering The Costs Of Dairy Production

September 2010

Internationally renowned nutritionist and forage expert, John Bax, Biotal Technical Manager, recently addressed the latest technical meeting hosted by Cornwall Farmers.

An audience of 50 farmers, vets and consultants attended the meeting entitled ‘Efficient rumen management and better forage utilisation for lower costs of production’.  Chaired by Cornwall Farmers’ Technical Manager, Dr Robin Hawkey, the presentation emphasised the role of forage quality to maximise intakes, stressing the importance of optimising rumen health.

As well as forage quality, John Bax illustrated how mixing forages, including wholecrop, could aid rumen management.  The mode of action of specific live yeasts was discussed, including the enhancement of the rumen microbial population, resulting in increased fibre digestion, and so improving milk from forage and lowering costs of production.
